Expertise Areas
Note that many of these skills (especially those under the same category) can and do overlap, and so if your character has knowledge in one then they're likely to have at least a cursory knowledge of the surrounding skills as well. You don't have to list every single area which your character has some semblance of knowledge in; this section is more to help you recognise and categorise your character's expertise areas.
Diplomacy, Legal & Administrative Skills
Diplomacy & Law
The ability to charismatically apply knowledge of a legal and/or political system to intergalactic relations.
Administration
The ability to manage resources within an organisation.
Engineering, Design & Technology Skills
Software Engineering
The ability to write, debug and execute software. Note: a language level refers to how close it is to binary, called machine code. The higher a language is, the closer it becomes to spoken Basic, and the easier it is to write and understand.
Hacking/slicing
The ability to infiltrate an existing computer system. Also refers to the ability to write viruses or rewrite existing programs for malicious purposes.
Electrical Engineering
The ability to reverse engineer and create electronic hardware.
Mechanical Engineering
The ability to design and construct machines.
Civil Engineering & Architecture
The ability to design and calculate for the construction of buildings, roads, and other infrastructure.
Design Thinking
The ability to draw upon logic, intuition, imagination and systematic reasoning to solve complex or 'wicked' interdisciplinary problems.
Chemical Engineering
The ability to produce and use chemicals.

Diplomacy, Legal & Administrative Skills
Diplomacy & Law
The ability to charismatically apply knowledge of a legal and/or political system to intergalactic relations.
- Novice: Character has a basic understanding of law and politics. Can attend diplomatic / legal situations and generally understand what is happening. Can diffuse some situations and convince others to their way of thinking.
- Competent: Character has a solid understanding of law and politics. Can contribute to diplomatic / legal situations and understand what is happening. Can tactfully diffuse most situations and convince others to their way of thinking.
- Expert: Character has very advanced knowledge of law and politics. Character leads and intuitively recognises the nuances of any diplomatic / legal situation. Can efficiently sway almost any situation to their favour.
Administration
The ability to manage resources within an organisation.
- Novice: Character has good organisational skills. Can command some control over resources. Can generally catalogue information.
- Competent: Character has excellent organisational skills. Can command comprehensive control over resources. Can catalogue important information and recognise useful trends.
- Expert: Character has outstanding organisational skills. Can command precise control over resources in accordance with their detailed knowledge of each resource's place in the organisation. Can catalogue complex important information and recognise useful abstract trends.
Engineering, Design & Technology Skills
Software Engineering
The ability to write, debug and execute software. Note: a language level refers to how close it is to binary, called machine code. The higher a language is, the closer it becomes to spoken Basic, and the easier it is to write and understand.
- Novice: Character has a basic understanding of the fundamentals of programming. Can read rudimentary scripts and generally understand its purpose. Can modify existing and write their own basic scripts, with clumsy execution. High-level languages only.
- Competent: Character has a solid understanding of programming. Can read most programs and understand their function. Can write moderate to advanced programs, with good execution. High- and medium-level languages, with some base understanding of low-level languages.
- Expert: Character has very advanced knowledge of programming. Can read almost any program and understand its function, and how it could be improved. Can write highly advanced program suites with precision. Can write several languages and read almost all of them, even at low-level.
Hacking/slicing
The ability to infiltrate an existing computer system. Also refers to the ability to write viruses or rewrite existing programs for malicious purposes.
- Novice: Character has a basic understanding of the fundamentals of hacking. Can read some programs and generally understand where some vulnerabilities may lay, although they might not know how to exploit them. Can modify existing and write their own basic viruses, with clumsy execution that would easily be detected.
- Competent: Character has a solid understanding of hacking. Can read most programs, pinpoint vulnerabilities and understand how to exploit them. Can write their own viruses, with good execution.
- Expert: Character has very advanced knowledge of hacking. Can read almost all programs, efficiently pinpoint vulnerabilities, and use advanced creative thinking techniques to elegantly exploit them. Can write highly advanced viruses with precision, and ensure they won't be detected.
Electrical Engineering
The ability to reverse engineer and create electronic hardware.
- Novice: Character has a basic understanding of the fundamentals of hardware. Generally understands the purpose of some hardware they come across. Can tinker with and make their own rudimentary hardware, with clumsy execution.
- Competent: Character has a solid understanding of hardware. Understands the purpose of and can reverse engineer most hardware they come across. Can make their own hardware, with good execution.
- Expert: Character has very advanced knowledge of hardware. Understands the purpose of and can reverse engineer almost all hardware they come across, and how it could be improved. Can make highly sophisticated and efficient hardware.
Mechanical Engineering
The ability to design and construct machines.

Design Thinking
The ability to draw upon logic, intuition, imagination and systematic reasoning to solve complex or 'wicked' interdisciplinary problems.
- Novice: Character has a basic understanding of problem solving. Can utilise divergent and convergent thinking, although perhaps not effectively. Can link knowledge from other disciplines.
- Competent: Character has a solid understanding of problem solving. Can utilise divergent and convergent thinking in harmony. Can draw upon knowledge of other disciplines.
- Expert: Character has very advanced problem solving skills. Can utilise divergent and convergent thinking in harmony, and knows exactly when to apply each. Can effectively identify all useful angles and elements in a 'wicked' problem and draw upon other disciplines to solve it.
Chemical Engineering
The ability to produce and use chemicals.
